Graduating from the now defunct 1D barcodes, many manufacturers around the world are now using 2D barcodes because they offer improved functionality and efficiency that can’t be achieved with linear 1D.

What is All-In-One POS in Real Sense?

An all-in-one point of sale (POS) system, like its printer counterpart, combines technologies and integrates them to maximize value coupled with convenience to end users.

When we talk about an all-in-one POS system, it refers to an integrated POS that should deliver everything a trader needs while dealing with customers. Though some manufacturers claim that their products fulfil every function at POS counters, most of them fall short of expectations, and force traders to buy additional machines to complete applications.

So what should exactly all-in-one POS systems have?

With the state election commission fixing the assembly polls in Tamil Nadu on April 13 and the model code of conduct coming into force, the ruling DMK alliance's two flagship pro-poor schemes have come to a grinding halt.

THE FREE distribution of 1,62,80,000 colour television sets and conversion of 21 lakh huts to concrete houses, have been stalled with 10 lakh more TV sets are yet to be distributed and only 60,000 houses have been completed in the first phase of construction.

C(r)ashing on IIT/JEE Entrance Exams

The advertisement read:

JOIN US FOR A ONE-MONTH CRASH COURSE TO CLEAR THE IIT/JEE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS. SUCCESS GUARANTEED.

I was bewildered to read this. The pamphlets had been given to my son—who is writing the twelfth board this time—by someone at his school’s entrance.
Being a parent, I was already worried, as being the state-board student and without a long-term preparation, his chances of cracking (even) the IIT Main is almost nil. Like me, most of the parents in Tamil Nadu are waiting expectantly for the cut-off marks to be scored by their wards to enter into the Anna University-affiliated colleges—or at least one of the top ten— with the stream of their choice.

Gita and Its Relevance to Modern Life

One day my son came up to me with a few questions.
“Father, did Lord Krishna ever exist?”
“Did he create the famous Bhagavad Gita in the battlefield of Kurukshetra?”
“As God, he could have stopped the war and avoided bloodshed, couldn't he? Why didn't he do that?”
I was not surprised to hear such questions from him as chanting The Gita forms a daily activity in his school, which tries to sow the goodness of The Gita in the young minds. Even today, I felt his questions have relevance.

The Funny Side of Our Education System

Ever since the ‘cut-off’ mark system was introduced to get an admission to Anna University and its affiliated colleges—after scraping the common admission test—students are being subjected to hardships – mentally and physically.
For state board students, sadly, they can’t aspire to crack the IITs and other central university entrances by just relying on their academic knowledge. Thanks to the curriculum, they have no option but to depend on their cut-off marks to get into colleges in the state under Anna University, irrespective of their reputation.

Property Market Is Not Moving Towards A Crash: Anuj Puri

To promote green initiatives, the government should come forward to introduce incentives, which would act as a catalyst for the development and absorption of new green buildings, says Anuj Puri, Chairman and Country Head, Jones Lang LaSalle India. In an interview with K Ramanathan, he speaks about the possibility of price correction, green buildings and investment options in real estate.

1. What will be the best investment option in the prevailing situation -- real estate, gold or securities?
Whether residential real estate is an asset class for investment is a tricky issue and there is no sure-shot formula for its viability. It is to be noted that investors have different degrees of experience, market knowledge, expertise and risk appetites for different asset classes. People who have lack of expertise in stock trading, real estate trading or commodity trading may not see satisfactory return on investment (ROI) from the market.

Should I Say TATA To TATASky?

When we landed in Chennai on 9th February, 2007 from the most beautiful city of India (Chandigarh), one of our major worries was to fix up a cable connection to our TV-addicted kids. Our worry multiplied further when we realized that the local cable networks did not fodder the required Hindi and famous kids’ channels which my children wanted to watch. After analyzing the pros and cons of various private operators, we finally zeroed in on TATASky connection thinking that the brand will never disappoint us.

The instrument and connectivity came with a price tag of about Rs 4,000, which included the cost of Digicom, dish and connecting charges. The service was prompt though the monthly subscription was little on the higher side compared to the charges that we were paying at Delhi and Chandigarh for the same channels. But for children’s sake, we decided to bore the brunt. Later the house hunting episode began to go nearer to our elder son’s school in Virugambakkam.

A Visit To Putlur Angala Parameswari Temple

Recently I had been to Putlur near Chennai, famous for the temple dedicated to Goddess "Angala Parameswari (Goddess Parvathy). The interesting feature of the temple is its legend itself. As the belief goes, the presiding deity is made of sand looks like a pregnant woman lying on the ground.

A view from temple entrance

According to a legend, a poor villager was tortured by a village head for the borrowed money and he was asked to plough an infertile land full of rocks. While plaguing the villager noticed that blood was oozing out from a place and a sand structure of Devi in the form of pregnant woman came out from the ground. The deity was later named as Angalaparameswari by the villagers and a temple was built around the sand"putru" (sand structure in Tamil where snakes reside) hence the place took the name as Putlur.

In Search Of Lord At Sabarimala

The recent stampede at Sabarimala temple during the annual “Makar jyothi” (celestial light) festival in which more than 100 people were killed and unaccounted injured , has exposed the temple authorities’  and state government’s ulterior motive to cheat the gullible devotees, not one or two days, but decades together in the name of faith.

From the days immemorial, Ayyappa devotees have been thronging to the hill shrine during the “Makaravilaku” season, only to witness the celestial light popularly known as “Makar Jyoti” or “Makaravilakku” during the evening hours on Makar Shankaranti day on the hill called Ponnambalamedu. It’s been believed by the devotees that the Lord Ayyappa himself appears as a light across the hill three times during those occasion. Anna And Associates

A lot has been written about social reformer and Gandhian Anna Hazare, his fight against corruption, his fast that lead to forming of Lokpal Bill committee and the latest, smear campaign launched by the vested interests against the civil society members of the committee.

After probably the Independence, Anna has made the people feel that the country should be united for one cause - to root-out corruption from the society. Will he be able to do that single-handedly? With corruption finding its deep roots, with detractors around and political parties and bureaucrats waiting opportunities to derail the Bill and dump Anna with some pretext, it's the last available opportunity given by Anna Hazare to the democratic people of India to cleanse the system and make India a corrupt-free society.

Of Covered Or Carpet Area Of Your Living Space

If you are planning to buy home it is very important to know the exact meaning of terms like carpet area, built up area, super area to avoid getting cheated and you may end up paying more than the actual cost of a property. The apartment that is sold as a spacious 1200 sq ft, is actually not 1200 sq ft if one count its actual covered area, or carpet area.

As the name suggests, the area one can spread the carpet. Though in real terms, it’s the usable areas of the house enclosed within the walls. ‘Need For A Policy Change In Affordable Housing’

We are in constant touch with the concerned authorities and working for a fast and efficient approval system, says Sandeep Mehta, newly elected President of Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI), Chennai.

1. What are the issues you are going to focus as newly elected CREDAI, Chennai President?
As you are aware, today developers are going through a major challenge in getting approvals. My first and foremost priority would be to work with the authorities, like CMDA, DTCP, and see how best we can bring down the approval cycle to the minimum possible time. Approvals are taking six months or even one year, and the ultimate sufferers are the end users.  After all, developers are playing a role of middleman, wherein they accumulate various components like land, contractors, building materials to produce the finished product. As a project gets delayed, the cost of interest comes on it. This cost will finally pass on to the customers.
