Recently I had been to Putlur near Chennai, famous for the temple dedicated to Goddess "Angala Parameswari (Goddess Parvathy). The interesting feature of the temple is its legend itself. As the belief goes, the presiding deity is made of sand looks like a pregnant woman lying on the ground.

According to a legend, a poor villager was tortured by a village head for the borrowed money and he was asked to plough an infertile land full of rocks. While plaguing the villager noticed that blood was oozing out from a place and a sand structure of Devi in the form of pregnant woman came out from the ground. The deity was later named as Angalaparameswari by the villagers and a temple was built around the sand"putru" (sand structure in Tamil where snakes reside) hence the place took the name as Putlur.
